Orange Coneflower

Family Asteraceae

Characteristics:
* Flower composite, daisy-like; 8-15 rays surround a spiky 1-1 1/2" wide black or brown cone. Rays red or orange with yellow tips.
* Leaves lance-shaped, hairy, ascending partway up stem.
* Height: 1-3'.

Natural History:
* Flowers August - October.
* Habitat: Woodlands, meadows.
* Range: Mostly grows in the southeastern United States; often cultivated in gardens.
