Characteristics:
* Leaves opposite, broad-elliptic, dark green above and lighter beneath, turning deep red in autumn, 1 1/2-3". Like all dogwoods, veins follow leaf edges.
* Leaf stem slender, purple to blood red above, greenish underneath.
* Flowers dull white, flat-topped.
* Fruits purple-black, shiny berries.
* Height: 6-15'.

Natural History:
* Flowers May - June.
* Fruits August - September.
* Introduced from Europe, often cultivated and planted as an ornamental plant.
