Neurotransmitter Synthesis

(Acetylcholine)

The following films are from Professor Betty Zimmerberg's excellent Multimedia Neuroscience Education Project at Williams College

cholinergic cells (neurons that use acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter) are found in several different locations of the brain

choline uptake into the neuron from surrounding fluid

after the choline enters the cell, Acetyl CoA (brown) and choline bind to the transferase enzyme(grey), the enzyme then takes an acetyl group from Acetyl CoA and adds it to the choline making Acetylcholine which together with CoA leaves the enzyme

After its synthesis, acetylcholine (ACh) is packaged into vesicles.
