Registered murders in the Netherlands
In response to international news reports, Statistics Netherlands has decided to summarise its data on murder and attempted murder within the Netherlands. In 1996 the police registered 273 cases of murder nation-wide. This number has been more or less the same for years. It is the equivalent of 1.8 murders per 100 000 of the population (16+ million).
These figures refer to all murders registered in the Netherlands regardless of the victims nationality.
Furthermore, the police registers the number of attempted murders. The attempted murder figure is around 17 per 100 000 of the population. These refer to cases where the victims do not die. The number of attempted murders has been quite stable for a number of years as well.
