Life in Crescent Court By Jaime Gamero

SCENE 1 My mom and I lived in a corrupt world where there was always violence, disorder and harsh treatment of the poor. We lived on an abandoned house, located on a street called Crescent Court. My street - crescent court - was probably one of the worst streets on planet Oxide. There were gunshots and crashes through out the whole day. For that reason my mom never let me out, whether it was to burn the trash or play outside. So most of the time I was usually in my house. The boys in my block weren't really friendly to me, except for one girl called Mary Lee. She was not only nice, but also smart and very cute. The first time I saw her was in front of my house. I thought she was just passing through but I was wrong; she lived right in front of me. I've been in Crescent Court for quite some time and I had never seen a girl till that day. I was throwing out the trash when she came along and starting talking to me:

Mary: Hi!

Thomas: Oh! Hi!

Mary: I'm Mary! What's your name?

Thomas: I'm Thomas Mary: Nice to meet you Thomas

Thomas: Nice to meet you Mary. It's good to see a girl around the block for the first time.

Mary: Well! I'll talk to you later then. My mom's probably worried.

Thomas: O.K then bye!

Mary: (running) bye! That's how I met my first friend. From then on we started hanging out together.

SCENE 2 At the age of 12 I got a burned on my face with a pan while my mom was cooking beans. She looked away to the sink while I was still in front of the stove. The burner fell of and the pot tipped over and fell right on my face.

Thorn: AAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! MMMMMMMMMOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM! Help me! Help me! Please mom!

I began to cry. My mom rushed to where I was laying down screaming and crying. Since there where no hospitals she put a bag of ice over my face and left it there for a while; that's all she could have done. After the burn cooled off she put a clean cloth to prevent infection and lay me down on the couch.

Before I fell asleep I said:

Thorn: (in pain) From now on I'm wearing a paper bag over my head, nobody is going to love me no more.

SCENE 3 In this world there were either rich people or poor people. The rich lived in the sky in floating buildings, while we lived on the rusted, stench ground of Oxide. We weren't given the chance to rise and make money like the rich, we had lots of problems, social and economical.

Thorn: Mom, what's the point of going to school if the rich aren't going to give us any chances anyway? The work we do in this ghetto world is worth nothing up there! Why? Why do I have to go to school!

SCENE 4 People all around the world started to kill each other for food. The rich looked down, amused, but you could sense their fear.

Rich 1: Look at them! They are like animals! Fighting for scraps of food!

Rich 2: We are going to have to get rid of them!

Rich 1: There's no other way out.

SCENE 5 The rich were so frustrated that they decided to put an end to it all. They planned to drop 5 nuclear warheads all over the globe to finally get rid us, the poor, and live on their own, up there in the skies.

SCENE 6 When we found out, we tried to run for our life, but it was to late. The mob went crazy.

SCENE 7 A few seconds before the warheads touched land, my mother took me to an underground base to prevent radiation. I was the only one that could fit in there.

Mom: Thorn listen to me O.K! You stay down here till I tell you to come up. Do you understand? (crying) Do you understand?

Thorn: (crying) Yes!

Mom: Good!

She gave me the biggest hug a mother could ever give to a son and then said:

Mom: I love you... She shut the door and went upstairs. That's the last time I saw her alive.

SCENE 8 After the bombs were released, 85% of the poor population was whipped out. There were only a few survivors left.

SCENE 9 I was so scared that I ran to ground level to check on my mom, but forgot that the burn on my face might get infected.

Thorn: Mom! Where are you?

But all I found was dirt. To my surprised, the radiation in my face gave me extraordinary powers, which turned my hair into flames and my body into pure human heat. I looked around but there was nothing, only the high-rises of the rich floating in the sky. With nothing else to do, I went back to my only corner of the world, Crescent Court, hoping to find Mary Lee:

Thorn: If only I could find her, then I will love someone and will be able to show the rich, that love is the only gift.
