• Some additional terminology to note in 1.3:
  • column matrix
  • row matrix
  • (certain) matrix products viewed as linear combinations or row or column matrices
  • coefficient matrix for a linear system
• Read Section 1.4
  • Note which algebra rules do hold for matrix multiplication and which do not hold.
• Terminology to note in 1.4:
  • commutative, associative, distributive, cancellation
  • zero matrix (m x n) and notation for it
  • identity matrix (n x n) and notation for it
  • invertible or nonsingular (square) matrix
  • singular or noninvertible (square) matrix
  • inverse of (an invertible square) matrix
  • powers of a (square) matrix
  • polynomial function of a (square) matrix
• Begin to outline for yourself the various facts/theorems in 1.4 and their proofs.
• Note the formula given in 1.4 for the inverse of an invertible 2 x 2 matrix.
