- Closed-book
- To be handed out Monday, March, 4 and due Wednesday, March 6
at class time.
- Time limit: 60 minutes, which should be more than you need
unless one of the proofs eludes you.
- Calculators to be used only for number arithmetic, not for
anything else.
- Covers HWK 8.
- Covers Sections 2.1 - 2.4.
- Covers/includes
- definition of determinant
- evaluating determinants by cofactor expansion
- using elementary row operations in connection with finding
determinants
- properties of determinants and proofs/reasoning based on
them
- Long Theorem (what it says and what it doesn't say)
- emphasizes material covered in class
- Does not include
- formula for inverse in terms of adjoint
- Cramer's Rule
- Will include some computational problems.
- Will include some short proofs (which should be written with
care, so reasoning is clearly stated).
- HWK 8 will probably provide sufficient practice. If you want
more problems, you can pretty much choose any of the problems from
2.1 - 2.4.
