Sociology at Wellesley

My senior year at Wellesley I took two sociology courses on Human Rights, and I will always regret not studying sociology sooner! Not only did the courses provide an excellent complement to my major, Latin American Studies, but they also pushed my thinking in new directions. Though I first approached sociology with rather simple views on issues of rights and culture, the curriculum challenged me to reconsider everything from intervention in current armed conflicts to how iniquities, such as the slave trade, can or cannot be effectively eradicated. I found the theoretical and practical challenges fascinating - so much so that the coursework helped influence my future academic and professional goals. Moreover, I know from personal experience that the Sociology Department at Wellesley supports students and alumnae alike, as my former professor, Thomas Cushman, has provided me with written recommendations, as well as general information and advice, years after graduation.

Today

Revealing the precarious nature of rights and the spectrum of human behavior, Ronnie’s sociology classes reinforced her decision to pursue an internship at The Carter Center in Atlanta and apply to law school. Last fall she began her pursuit of a J.D. at Harvard Law School and continues to build upon the critical thinking foundation her sociology courses provided. She is certain that the concepts and questions tackled in both text and lectures will be significant in guiding her future studies and career.
