The Department of History has had various names, and at times has been a joint department with other disciplines since the college opened in 1875:

  • 1875-1888 History Department
  • 1888-1896 History and Political Science Department
  • 1896-1900 History and Economics Department (consisting of two parts: History and Political Science, Economics)
  • 1900-1931 History Department
  • 1931-1940 History and Political Science Department
  • 1940 to present History Department
Scope and Content:

History Department records date from 1887 to 2002, mostly 1970s to 1990s and measure 3 linear feet. The records include correspondence, budgets, examinations, flyers, syllabi and reading lists. Since the budget materials include salary information, they are restricted, and may be made available only by those who have the permission of the President's Office.

There also are individual personnel files of former faculty that include curricula vitae, salary letters, SEQs [student evaluation questionnaires]. These personnel files are restricted, and may be made available only by those who have the permission of the President's Office.

The records also contain material on the Barnette Miller Foundation, established in 1956 by bequest of Barnette Miller, Professor of History Emerita. Funds from the Barnette Miller Foundation were earmarked for use by the History and Political Science Departments in promoting the study of international relations by undergraduate and graduate students, or to sponsor visiting lecturers.

There also is a small amount of material on the House of Commons, an annual debate by the class in Constitutional History, held in March or February under the aegis of the History Department. House of Commons programs in this collection date from 1887 to 1897, and 1936.
