I. Biographical

Scope and Contents note

The following materials are included in this series: vitae, autobiographical manuscripts outlining her career development, published autobiographical data and miscellaneous biographical information, clippings and press releases, travel diaries and an address book, original incoming correspondence and copies of outgoing correspondence, grant applications, notes, and a scrapbook. Some of these items reflect Professor Evan's' interests in such subjects as Harry S. Truman, the American Foreign Service, Oriental art, and her travels in Latin America and Europe for research and professional conferences.

Among Evans' correspondents were Political Science Professors Robert R. Wilson (Duke University) and Louise Overacker (Wellesley College), Philip M. Phibbs (President of the University of Puget Sound), and several of her former Wellesley students. Her correspondence includes such topics as Evans' award and promotions, leaves of absence, research grants and sabbaticals, professional openings at other institutions, and evaluations of monographs and manuscripts sent to her.

III. Courses Taught

Scope and Contents note

Most of the series pertain to Professor Evans' long teaching career in the Political Science Department at Wellesley College. In addition, at the end of this section are 11 folders of items from the three international law courses she taught at the University of Puget Sound School of Law (1973-74).

Though materials from courses taught by Evans early in her career are lacking, a comprehensive body of materials exists for the three major courses she taught at Wellesley: International Law, The Criminal Justice System, and Law and the Administration of Justice (a course she developed as a result of her experience as a Harvard fellow, 1961-62). In addition, during the 1960s and early 1970s, she directed a seminar on human rights and one on the legal problems of the poor or minorities (for which students did research in neighborhood law offices and agencies in the city). The remaining Wellesley teaching materials are from three comparative government courses, an introductory law course, a not for credit course on current issues in American law, and independent studies. (Consult the Research/Writings Section for three casebooks Evans developed for use in her courses which she intended to publish.)

The Wellesley materials, which are arranged by course number, consist of lecture syllabi, reading lists, and outlines; lists of students in her classes; notes by Evans for her lectures and a case index; printed casebook materials consisting of required class readings; correspondence; examination questions; moot court materials; and student research papers. Similar types of materials comprise the University of Puget Sound section, with the addition of a report reflecting Evans' participation on the Library Committee at that institution. The Puget Sound course materials are arranged by course title.

IV. Wellesley Activities

Scope and Contents note

This series reflects Evans' activities at Wellesley, especially her involvement on Political Science Department and College committees. The materials consist chiefly of correspondence, agenda, minutes, drafts, reports, notes, student resumes and evaluations, newsletters, and other printed materials.

A folder of general correspondence is followed by Political Science Department files. These relate to Evans' participation in the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Program, The Wellesley Law Club, Pre Law advising and the Department newsletter, News and Notes (edited by Evans). A folder containing typescripts of reports to the president and two department histories concludes the Political Science segment. General printed material on curriculum planning, budget, statistics, and other activities of the Department were removed and placed with the Departments' records.

The next segment of materials consists of Professor Evans' evaluation of other faculty members' performance; requests from students for letters of recommendations (some include resumes), Evans' recommendations, and statistics on students admitted to law schools; and student evaluations of Evans' teaching.

At the end of the College Activities Section can be found Evans' College Committee files, including the Committee on Faculty Appointment, Committee to Review the Committee Structure of Academic Council, Education Department Search Committee, Librarian Search Committee, Search Committee for Dean of Students, and Urban Studies (EB WELL) Committee. The bulk of these materials concern the Committee to Review the Structure of Academic Council, which was instigated and chaired by Evans.

Material on Evans' service on the Committee on Faculty Awards (which she chaired from 1979-80) has been removed from this segment and added to the records of that committee. In addition, internship material has been removed and placed with the records on the functioning of various internship programs.

V. Research and Writings

Scope and Contents note

The Research and Writings series includes correspondence, prospectus, outlines, draft manuscripts of Evans' works, copies of published works, notes (including bibliographic notes), indexes, and reference materials. This section encompasses both Evans' published and unpublished writings, with the notable exception of those stemming from her participation in professional organizations. (See "Professional Activities" Section)

Her extensive writings on such subjects as treaty law, extradition, political asylum and the legal control of international terrorism, include the following published works: Legal Aspects of International Terrorism; sections of three books on rendition, self executing treaties, and U.S. nationality laws; 30 articles and reports; numerous case reports for International Law Reports and the American Journal of International Law; and book reviews for several legal and political science journals. Materials for the book on terrorism are arranged in the sequence in which they appeared in the published work. The remaining published writings are arranged chronologically within their respective categories; unpublished articles and case reports pertaining to them follow the published materials.

The remaining boxes consist of unpublished writings, including Evans' thesis on self executing treaties in the United States; three casebooks on the introduction to law, international law, and law and the administration of justice; three studies on the topics of political asylum, self executing treaties, and U.S. policy and practice in regard to extradition and informal methods of rendition of fugitive offenders; miscellaneous notes related to her research and teaching; and finally, two annotated books which she reviewed. Materials are arranged in the order listed above.

The rendition study, which comprises the largest segment of the unpublished materials, is arranged in the three part sequence suggested by Evans' extensive outlines for the work. Copies of some of her speeches and published articles, together with a few manuscripts, give some indication of the content and scope of Evans' last major research project.

Correspondence is filed with the pertinent work and includes original incoming and copies of outgoing correspondence. Significant correspondence exists with Sir Hersch Lauterpacht and Eli Lauternacht (both editors of International Law Reports), with academic associates such as Professors J. Woodford Howard, Jr. (Johns Hopkins University), Richard R. Baxter Law School of Harvard University) and John F. Murphy (University of Kansas), and various publishing firms.

VI. Professional Activities

Scope and Contents note

The Professional Activities seriouscomprises two parts: organizations' Evans belonged to; and conferences and committees she participated in as a speaker, consultant or member of a panel.

The organizational materials reflect Evens' long time involvement with the American Society of International Law (ASIL) and the American Branch of the International Law Association (ILA). These materials include correspondence; outlines; notes for and drafts of speeches; agenda, minutes, and reports of committees; memoranda; programs; and newsletters. They consist mostly of committee files which are arranged alphabetically. Committee folders for each organization are followed by files of that organization concerning panels and conferences in which she participated. The remaining files are arranged by organization (Association of University Women, American Law Institute, [American Section] Association Internationale de Droit Penal, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and World Association of Law Professors) and follow the ASIL and ILA materials. Articles, reports and papers which stemmed from Evans' organizational work are filed with the appropriate committee material.

The Conferences and Committees materials include outlines; notes for and drafts of speeches; agenda, minutes and reports; memoranda; and programs. They are generally foldered by title of sponsoring institution and are arranged chronologically. Two folders of correspondence concerning these conferences and committees may be found at the beginning of this section.
