During Mrs. Ruiz de Conde's lifetime the papers were to be available only to those who had her permission to examine them. In addition Mrs. Ruiz de Conde had placed specific time restrictions on some items. Other restricted material consisted of student grades and other items considered private by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act [FERPA], or by Wellesley College policy [such as salaries or evaluation of employees for appointment, reappointment or tenure].

Justina Ruiz de Conde was born November 30, 1909 in Madrid, Spain. She initially studied music and dance before earning a Master in Law from the University of Madrid in 1932. During the Spanish Civil War, Justina resided in Barcelona were she was active in organizing services for displaced children. This work brought her to the United States on a diplomatic mission in search of food aid where she presented her cause directly to Eleanor Roosevelt in New York City. During this time, Justina was the wife of Dr. Manuel Conde, a military doctor. After the defeat of the Republicans in 1939 they fled Spain separately; Justina to France and Dr. Conde to New York. They later divorced.

Justina arrived in France with the intention of continuing studies in law at the Sorbonne however, given the political climate, decided to leave for the United States. She arrived in Boston in 1939 and taught for a time at both Abbot Academy and Middlebury College in Vermont before earning her MA and Ph.D. from Radcliffe in 1943 and 1945 respectively.

Justina came to Wellesley College in 1941 where she moved progressively through faculty ranks, becoming assistant professor in 1946, associate professor in 1949, and full professor in 1958. Justina retired from Wellesley College in 1975 after serving as chair of the Spanish Department for a total of eight terms (1946-1970). After her retirement, Justina remained active at the Center for Research on Women at Wellesley College. She was honored by the Spanish Government in 1998 with the title and the insignia Dama de Isabel la Católica for her lifetime of service to Spain.

She is the author of numerous publications, principal among them El amor y el matrimonio secreto en los libros de caballerias, Un Pueblo Mexicano, Antonio Machado y Guiomar and El cantico americano de Jorge Guillén.

Justina Ruiz de Conde died on December 1, 2000 on Martha's Vineyard.

Papers of Justina Ruiz de Conde consist of 1.4 linear feet of records. Justina Ruiz de Conde transferred the initial segment of her papers to the archives along with some records of the Spanish Department. Other papers came in several accessions and scattered gifts, primarily between 1976 and 1979. (See the list of accessions at the beginning of the finding aid.).

Justina Ruiz de Conde arranged the papers before donating them. Some records of the Spanish Department were separated from Mrs. Ruiz de Conde's papers by the Archives staff during initial processing by an Archives student worker in 1981.

In 2007 the papers were reprocessed by Amy Stimac. Additional Spanish Department records were separated from Justina Ruiz de Conde's Papers during this reprocessing, and placed in the 3L Spanish Department series. These included: correspondence regarding the appointment of both Pedro Salinas and Jorge Guillén to positions at Wellesley, lectures and other papers of Salinas and Guillén, departmental material related to the Hispanic Society of America, departmental records of the Huntington and Sanborn Funds, materials relating to the International Institute for Girls in Spain, and material relating to the departmental publication of Estudios Hispánicos.

When this collection was reprocessed in 2007 items whose restrictions had expired were placed in unrestricted boxes. Restricted departmental records found in this series were moved to the restricted portion of 3L Spanish Department records.

Because they were personal letters, not pertaining to departmental business, one folder of Consuelo Berges letters previously in 3L Spanish Department records were moved to Justina Ruiz de Conde Papers.

Justina Ruiz de Conde Papers consist of articles, class notes, correspondence concerning other Wellesley faculty, students and noted Spanish authors. Also included are drafts, correspondence and information concerning books written by Mrs. Ruiz de Conde, information regarding the Spanish Association of University Women and Asociación Auxiliar del Niño. An index of correspondents is provided. Notable correspondents include Pedro Salinas, Jorge Guillén, and Thorton Wilder.

Records of the Spanish Department should be consulted in conjunction with Ruiz de Conde's Papers.
