This is an
enriched calculus course for entering students with good preparation
in the basics of beginning calculus. It is offered only in the fall
semester. Less time is devoted to techniques of differentiation and
integration than in the Department's other first-year calculus
courses. More time is spent gaining a deeper understanding of limits,
sequences and series, Riemann sums, and Taylor's Theorem.
Because students selected for Math 120 are especially well prepared,
instructors are able to introduce some extra topics of their own
choosing. Among these might be numerical methods and approximation,
further theoretical topics, or special applications of the integral.
As does Math 116, this course prepares students for Math 205
(Intermediate Calculus).
Open by permission of the department to students who have
completed a year of high-school calculus. Students who have studied
Taylor series should elect 205.
