Math 210, Differential Equations

Many applied problems can be modeled as differential equations: equations involving not just the usual operations of sums and products and such, but also involving differentiation. Instead of looking for the value of an unknown variable, one tries to find an unknown function. Modeling systems in this way is the basic technique in physics and engineering, and it is also widely used in many other subjects including biology, economics, and chemistry.

Mathematics 210 will emphasize practical methods for solving differential equations; although some time will also be spent showing where some of the equations come from and what sorts of issues can arise in attempting to solve them, actually finding solutions will be the largest part of the course.
