Beth Hennessey

Beth Hennessey

Professor of Psychology, Wellesley College

As a full professor of Psychology at Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA, I specialize in the study of the social psychology of creativity. More specifically, I am interested in the role played by motivation in the creative process and in how the environment (especially classroom environments) can impact motivational orientation. In recent years, my research has expanded to include cross-cultural considerations. This site provides an overview of my research, including information on my study of school children in China, with pictures from that trip. Two video clips are taken from an investigation designed to explore whether it might be possible to "immunize" children against the negative effects of expected evaluation and other classroom extrinsic constraints. The courses I teach at Wellesley College are listed with course descriptions. In addition, I list my publications with selected abstracts. Because no life is confined purely to academics, I have also included a description of my path to Wellesley, an abbreviated life story. For those interested in pursuing further information on the topic of the psychology of creativity, I have included links to the web sites of some of my colleagues.
